I am a former 1.8T'er and I am looking for a B6 S4. I always thought that I wanted a B5 S4, but one test drive and I was hooked on the B6! I have searched the forum quite extensively for guidance on buying a used B6, but I am still a little uncertain about what constitutes an early build '04 other than the generally agreed upon 10/03 date.
Here's the situation:
I have found an private party '04 S4 sedan, 6MT, 47K miles, perfect condition, no major mechanical history, and a fair price. My only hang-up is build date of 9/03. Looking for some opinions on whether this is concerning. I know some astute S4philes can tell the problematic early 04's by looking for visual differences in the engine compartment, so I have attached a photo of the potential vehicle's motor.
I appreciate any help, and I can't wait to hear that intoxicating V8 on a daily basis.
Thanks!!

a idler pulley issue. Also there have been a few people that have had issues with the heads. They claim there was still small pieces left over from manufacturing that could make there way into the system and cause damage. I have seen 4 people post about this over the net.
Other than those few thing I would not know if there were any others

and haven't had problems similar to what is claimed on other pre 11/03 build dates. afaik a database was never put together for the alleged "troubles".
If you found a car you like with a reliable warranty and are able to learn about the previous owner you are in a decent position. Don't forget...you'll be purchasing a car with 47k miles, not new or near new and it's 4-5 years old...BUYER BEWARE is all I can tell you. .02

Audi was aware of the defect but did not do a recall. Most pre 10/3 builds ended up in Europe. If the car has 47k and no problems, you're probably OK. Some had their engines (Long blocks)replaced but most occurred around 20K. It was a valve train issue. There also was an early 6MT problem with reverse.

and it's just that, a guess, is that a 9/03 build will be OK. Anecdotal reporting here is all I have to go on but the serious problems (valve and transmission problems) manifested themselves in earlier builds than 9/03. The cosmetic differences and minor functional differences came after 10/03 so anything earlier than that will have the cosmetic features of the earlier car even though the problematic items may have been resolved.
Cosmetically the picture you have shows the engine cover on the driver's side that indicates an 04 MY car. MY 2005 and later does not have the engine cover. It also has the pre-10/03 fuel rail design and old style oil dispstick.
Although I don't think there is a large risk with this particular car, I agree with s4for5, go with an '05. There will be plenty to choose from. Also, you have a better chance of getting an '05 with a CPO warranty on it. A few extra bucks but worth it IMHO.
