Default Gas mileage on a 160 mile trip with tiptronic

The computer showed 23.8 mpg at an average speed of 62mph
At 75 mph the tach showed 2500 rpm in 6th gear
This is with my car, tiptronic with 300 miles total on the car.

Default So why did you need to fill up?

Kidding....

My B5 has been 19.8-20.5mpg. 60mph. 80mph. Forever. Actual calculated from gallons pumped and mileage. The trip was alway 2.5-3mpg "optimistic." Check your trip calculator against real world if you get a chance, i'd be interested.

If the B6 would do 20mpg+...I'm REALLY going to start getting interested.

Believe it or not, that is about the mileage I get in my 2001 TT.

Default If it's anything like my B6 A4...

The gas mileage will be low for the first 5000 miles. The mileage will gradually improve over time. I've recently done a 344 mile trip (98% highway) and was able to get 26.8 mpg. Of course, I now have over 48000 miles logged. ;-)

I wonder why the tips are so much more efficient? I'da thought the other way around

Default Because TIPs shift more efficiently and are probably not flogged as hard as manuals

I was actually thinking about this this morning as I drove to work. I was in stop/go traffic so I had my tip in 3. As I drove the last bit of open street towards the parking garage I noticed that the engine revs were higher than normal. Note that this was at about 35 Mi/h. This was 3rd gear. Normally the tip would already have shifted to 4th. I could not imagine shifting 4 times if I had a manual just for that short stretch of road.

I'm sure the B6 TIP is much better than the B5 TIP so it's probably going to be more efficient.

Then of course there's the generalization that manual drivers drive harder/faster than tippers. That would make a big difference in gas milage.

Default Yeah, but then there's the constant torque converter losses...

...at least when not locked up.

Default i know, i know...8-P

Was just playing...BUT

My 01 had the same sticker and I've NEVER gotten close to 24mpg. And I drive 95.9% freeway. Lately, I've been driving a consistent 80-82mph and getting just under 20mpg. (NOTE: Before someone sounds off on my crazy driving, tell that to the soccer moms in their suburbans that are passing me on 280). So...try 80 for 40mins and report back. ;-)

Default but we're talking EPA testing here...

the numbers are known to be inaccurate, but they're SUPPOSED to test all vehicles the same. If the Tip shifts more efficiently, OK. But the fact that they're not flogged as hard shouldn't show up in the result.

I still don't see how (as mm said) it compensates for the torque converter loss. But it obviously does, somehow.
