Default GTI beat S4 for topgear track time

I was with family over christmas, and happened to catch the last epsiode of Top Gear, the BBC's car show. They had a test of the new GTI and BMW 130. The interesting part is that the GTI beat the S4 time on their track. These are stock cars, driven by the same driver - the STIG. Both seemed to be done in the dry.

The full line-up and times can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/powerlaps/

There's an older time for an R32 on the next page, 3 seconds down. What was the difference?
