HELP.Timing issues - S4 needing chain tensioner replacement ?UGHHHHHHHHH
#11
Hmm, looks like a cam-adjuster to me...
Look at the cylinders being affected, they are all on the driver's side bank. If it was the chain tensioner, you would have misfires on both banks.
The fact that fuel trim is running lean on bank 2 (driver's side bank) also seems to confirm this.
Regardless, some engine rebuild is going to have to be done in order to get that cam-adjuster right.
If the chain's have to be replaced, that's some serious coin. I would definitely get on AoA's case. Since you have maintained the maintenance to the T, oil changes, and have had every required service that was needed. I would argue that the chain is supposed to last the life of the car, therefore, if it goes, AoA pays for it.

I Agree w/ Wes, this happened to me - Cam Adjuster
Not sure about all of the codes you show, as I am not where I can get to my records, but I had a cam adjuster fail (to the fully advanced position). It ran rough as hell, although better at higher rpm where the cam timing was more appropriate. The fix was a complete teardown of the back of the engine in order to replace it. It also involved a flushing of all the oil galleys since the failure was caused by a bushing in the adjuster itself failing and consequently getting metallic filings in the oil.
Mine was a 9/03 build, and this happened with about 6,000 miles on the clock - no problems since.
Like Wes, I seriously doubt this is just a chain / tensioner problem.
Good luck, Bob

Thanks Wes (and everyone else) they are saying it is the tensioners to be replaced, not the chain
well that is their guess / diagnosis based on me dropping the car off on Friday. I do not know how much they ripped apart to find this out. I assume only the vag codes?
Worse case scneario I was given was tensioner, adjuster and cahnnels, until they remove the engine they do not know
5K is the estimate. ouch

Re: No worries Dr. 1/2 the reason I posted this is for other owners also
Anyone have an idea how much this job would cost? I assume the engine would have to come out and the trans would have to be seperated from the engine...

So what was the resolution with this issue? Was the cam chain tensioner replaced? What of the cam-adjuster? What did your call to Audi of America do?
I might have the same issue and I only have 54k miles on the engine. I find it mind boggling to face a repair of $5k (my estimate as well).
Thanks,
Ash
