Default Yup. Our cars drink gas. If it's that much of an issue you should keep the 540.

Your 540 is a beautiful car.

Default Fuel consumption was not the reason I bought the S4. If it is on the top of your list,

Then skip. Try the A4.

Default Just checked Consumer Reports stats on this

The 540 is no longer carried as a model but they have the 530 gas mileage. It averages the same as the S4 at an average of 20. However the city/highway splits are different with the 530 at 14/29 and the S4 at 17/26. Given that a criticism of the 540 was poor gas mileage I think you are looking at (at worst) the same as you are getting now. So, if it is long trips then it look like the lazy gearing on the 530 might get you a few MPG better. However, on what you state as your norm -3 mile commute, you should get better gas mileage than the 540

...Then you hit an 8-mile backup and your mpg went down to 22, right?

Default New plugs=better mpg

I just changed my plugs at 30k on the odometer, and the next tank of gas was the best mpg I've ever had--20 mpg. I'd never had better than 17-18 mpg before.

Default So you want a slower car?

That's what the trade off is if you want to change gearing...

I'm tired of hearing about how the gearing is to blame
