Default 2nd, cant complain if you have a portly sedan w a v8 under the hood. However I do...
wish the tank was bigger therefore reducing the trips to the gas station. This lead me to buy a gas-sipping DD which i highly recommend.

I had a 97 540 and occasionally got 26 hwy. Now I am lucky to get 21

70 to 80mph usually, but this is on road trips of over an hour at least.

No, I actually agree with you. Taller gearing would increase fuel economy but decrease performance.

exactly. you'll get 24-25 at 55-60, then it's downhill, and gone by 75+

Default Screw "gearing"...they could have had an actual overdrive gear, namely the 6th...
and then those who say these are designed for the autobahn, bla bla blah...who's hitting the 170mph top speed on the autobahn on a daily basis? I'd be ok with 159 in 5th.

Default It is a "overdrive" input shaft on the trans turns less than the output.
3k rpm at 80 is perfect...any lower and you would have to down shift just to get up a hill

My TIP gets 24/25 mpg highway at 70-75 mph.
