Default How would you rate winter driving in the S4?

With snow tires of course. I like my A8L, loved driving my 1995 S6 in the winter. Is the S4 too low, is it terrific in the winter? I am tempted on the S4 as there are some end of season deals on a new S4 and my A8 is undergoing some costly repairs. Should I wait for the new supercharged V6 S4? Just curious. Especially as we are getting bombed with snow and high winds here in Buffalo tonight.

Thanks.

Tom

Default I live near the White Mountains in NH and my S4 was great with a set of..

toyo snow tires. Im big into skiing and it had no problem getting to the ski resorts with 12+ inches of snow on the ground. I only got it stuck once and it was while pulling onto a road with a snow bank that was as high as my headlights, but even then it didnt take much to get out.

I have had two S4's which are daily drivers. The B7 is slightly lowered with PSS9's. B5 was stock. I travel to VT alot and I have never had a problem. I run 4 snow tires that are the same fitment as stock usually on a second set of wheels. I get the highest speed rating. They run great. You need to be careful on heavily snowed packed surfaces, but I generally run rings (4 of them) around most other vehichle.

Default You may be sorry if you don't wait.

The B8 S4 looks to have significant improvements in chassis, handling, fuel economy and low end torque. Not that the B6/B7 cars are bad, because they aren't.

Default I think I had to. My A8L was rapidly becoming very costly.

The dealer had advertised $10,000 off MSRP and took my 2002 A8L in trade and I did not have to pay the $3,000 required to fix a few electrical issues. So in the end I saved $13,000 and have a 5 year 75,000 warranty. The new S4 looks to be a better car, some more room, etc. but it does not arrive until the Fall. The rate that I was pouring money into my A8L (although it is a terrific, safe car), I just lost all confidence. I just felt that it was going to be a costly year.
Anyway, I will be picking up a black S4 with carbon fibre trim on the 31st.

Default I like the 08 S4 Avant WAY better than the next ones. Design, etc...we have Nokian...

WRG2 and I just drove from Seattle to Eugene and back Monday passing every single lifted, butched out full size truck out there. The only person really hanging with me was a tiny awd japanese car that must have had some great tires, maybe studded, he was flying. This is where there were ridges b/n lanes over 12" high. Long trip but fun returning to Seattle with the mom around 3am. 205Portland was the worst.

Default It all depends. I would imagine that your A8 would be better...

My C5 A6 was the best car I ever drove in the snow, and I find that ground clearance is somewhat limiting in my S4 when dealing with deep snow. That said, it is better on snow shallower than the door sills than the A6 was. I really wish I could jack up the suspension a la allroad for winter driving and then return to low sport settings for all other scenarios...
