Hybrids
So I hear Lexus is developing a GS 450h--a hybrid version of the GS 430 with gobs of horsepower. How many of you would buy a hybrid Audi with lots of power, quattro, etc? How much would it be worth for the option?
I'm a bit surprised none of the German companies have jumped on this bandwagon at all.

Diesel!
All German and European carmakers have been building very sophisticated and powerful dieselengines for a long time. The engines and the european diesel gasoline are clean, can be pretty powerful, lots of torque, are available even with the high end models and get great gas milage. Diesel also is much cheaper than regular fuel in Europe.
Probably not worth to invest into hybrids just for the US market unless they bought the engines from the japanese makers which seems unlikely.

Yes, it would be nice. I've been thinking..
about hybrids a lot. Specifically, every few days I fill up on >$3/gal gas.
There seems to be some proof that hybrid cars can be made at least as powerful at peak HP as conventional.
However, a lot of the fun factor from the 340 HP v8 is in accelerating at low RPM. This is typically when the electric engine would be on. Who cares about having a huge v8 when you're just cruising the freeway? 85% of the time, I'd be content with a 150HP v4 at speed on the freeway (yes, there are those passing times.. but in general, it's not worth having such low mileage).
So in summary, I'm not sure they could duplicate the experience at this point.. but I'm holding out hope. It would be nice not to melt all the glaciers too fast. I do live near sea level.

The problem is, "hybrid Audi with lots of power, quattro" wouldn't equate....
Hybrids are supposed to get great mileage. You're canceling that out with the quattro and "lots of power."
Hey, if they can pull it off, I'd be game. Why not?
In any case, I wouldn't mind a cheapo hybrid beater from toyota or honda.

Can you say Turbo Deisel?
That's the Audi answer, and has been for a long time in Europe. The US market just doesn't go for the deisels like the gas concious Europeans do. WHen gas is $4 a gallon here, we'll see a lot more deisels.
