I cannot understand why people continue to compare BMW vs. Audi.

I think you are confusing a rather boring subject with one that you don't care about
have another cigar and ignore
True however, that this is clearly what most want to talk about cause it does get most attention, so you're in the minority, so stop being a trouble maker and get back to figuring out what tires you want for next year.
23 more days until VIR, BTW !

Market segment...we rarely see any comments on Saab or Volvo, and when BMW is mentioned here......
everybody starts frothing. The marque really inspires some ill-will for which I don't get....maybe it's just me? MB gets much more respect here than Bimmer.

Saab and Volvo are struggling to stay solvent...
...hardly 'competing', as in vying for top sales honors in their segments. Saab doesn't really have anything remotely competitive, and all Volvo has is the new coupe/convertible and the ageing SUV. Hardly worth "frothing" over when compared to the many great products in the Audi/BMW ranges.
Any ill-will is insecurity. Both companies make great products, and try to market them in the US to slightly different niches. However, both of their marketing departments are blowing it right now, IMO...Audi's insistence to go up-market by raising prices first without product to back it up, and BMW abandoning the old but definitive Ultimate Driving Machine campaign.
