Default I was chatin with my sales guy at the dealer last night about S4 engine problems.>>>>

I asked him if they've had any engine problems yet on any of the S4's that they have sold. He told me they've had one so far. He said it was the same thing with the engine dropping the valve. He said from the best they could tell, it looked like the valve spring cracked which caused a chain reaction and the valve to drop into the combustion chamber (all over from there). He said they found pieces of the broken spring under the valve cover. He was wondering if Audi changes suppliers for the valve spring or something???

This is such a shame! Damn you Audi!

Default How could Audi be smart enough to engineer......

such an amazing car, but overlook something so important as to cause whole engine failures??? Audi is selling cars to make money right? This isn't the way to make a profit that's for sure.

Default Be reasonable...

They spec a valve spring, vendor supplies a valve spring, vendor didn't meet the spec Audi demanded or had manufacturing problems such that some springs were bad. Pretty simple, really, happens all the time (coil packs, anyone?)

I agree... With how complicated these cars are, I am amazed that it doesn't happen more often.

Default Yeah - when I made LEDs they were so simple: die, leadframe, gold wire, and encapsulate

yet to make them reliable required lots of engineering on my part. I can not imagine how every part on the car has to meet the same criteria of reliability.

Default Or even...

Vendor specs the material to make the valve spring and the spring vendor's material source didn't meet spec. The chain of blame can go back quite a way. Ususlly in the automotive world, there is full tracability all the way back to the mill for every component.

How many races have you seen lost because a 20 cent part breaks on a million $ race car.

Default Do you honestly think Audi doesn't understand that?

Think about how much extra money this will cost them in the long run. Think about how much money all the extra warranty work on blown 2.7t turbos cost them.

Default Please - do you really think any manufacturer could check every part?

That doesn't even happen for mil-spec parts where they cost several hundreds time more.

If Audi checked every valve spring for tensile strength, the car would cost $500,000...

Default Re: I was chatin with my sales guy at the dealer last night about S4 engine problems.

So I pick up my new S4. Silver, Tip.

With EIGHT HUNDRED MILES on it, a valve spring breaks and it sucks a valve!!!!!!

Sunset Imports (Portland OR) has ordered a new engine, from Germany, takes at least a week. Then there's installation. Obviously, no one there has EVER done this before on a 2004 S4.

No way are they gonna do the job the gnomes at Audi Germany would do. But what choice do I have?

As the piston said to the valve, this really sucks!!!!!

Any ideas? Any ideas about who to ask for ideas?

Help!!! Please.

Feel free to reply to : leomunter@msn.com

TIA,

Leo
