Default It is a common problem with this engine. Many B6ers have reported burning more than that.

BTW, Audi claims that consumption of 1 qt of oil per 1000 miles "is within normal limits" Many B6er who did experience oil consumption issues before 5k miles have had the oil consumption diminish or end after 5k. But many others continue to consume oil. My car has not used 1 drop of oil in 17K miles and some others report the same. You are either burning or leaking the oil. I doubt that it is leaking. Why are you burning oil? Because the piston rings were not seated early in break in. Are they seated yet? Maybe? If you continue to burn oil then the answer is no. Many, but not all, who have repoerted oil consumption issues, broke in their engines very gingerly as per Audi recommendations. Many who have had no oil consumption drove the car hard from the beginning. There are exceptions. BTW there ame 13+ qts in the crankcase. (Yes, 13+). Only 9+ qts are changeable during an oil change. The rest is trapped in the engine and oil galleys. If you got an oil light, you are probably close to 1 1/2 to 2 qts low. Either top off the oil or take it in to Audi for a FREE top off. Also schedule your 5K service which they might do for you since you are so close in mileage. Make sure that they rotate your tires for free @ 5k and fill the crankcase totally at that time. Check the oil level before leaving the dealership so that yoy will know it is full so you can monitor oil consumption acurately. Don't assume they will do it right!

Default Which is why I'm trying the 'hard' break in technique.

I took the good Dr's advice on the boards about breaking in the car, so hopefully, by 5k miles, I'll be able to tell you definitively whether or not my car drinks oil.

(almost at 1K)

Default You should get an some idea before 5K. But don't be concerned about

1 qt in the first 5k, even though many have had no oil consumption. I don't think you will be sorry. Between 5K and 10 K, many engines that had initial oil issues have had reduced oil consumption.
