Ok, help me out. So on 2 occasions I start the car, it starts to shake, the CEL flashes, and I'm

exactly...
My CEL was stable and not flashing. If the CEL is flashing, your engine is about to go byebye and you NEED to pull over NOW! Weird. I'd definitely have the dealer check it out. Never heard of it happening just on start up though.

Sounds like water in the gas.
It sounds like what happened to me in my 4Runner. I think I had water in my gas. It was a very intermittent problem. The truck shuddered and felt like it was dying. Sometimes it died and I restarted it with no problem. To fix it, I ran the tank down low and poured in a bottle of water drier (or remover, or whatever its called). It fixed the problem. The drier is mostly alcohol. I did it when the tank was low to maximize the drying affect.

If I come back on friday from beach, love to join you at the BMW meet..
You can crash at my house at least on Saturday night and park in my Garage. Can go out for a good steak dinner. If I come back on friday you can stay friday night as well. Will let you know ASAP. Just forgive the condition of my house a little untidy :-(

Take it to the dealer, let them read the fault codes...
The flashing CEL sets fault codes that can be read by the dealer's VAG tool.
They too may tell you it's just a bad tank of gas, but at least you'll know for sure.
