OK - someone convince me why the *FVCK* I want a door sill that sticks out?

We have had 2 days of snow/freezing rain in the Portland/Vancouver area and our roads are now basically washboard ice skating rinks. I got called in to fix some broken network equipment this evening and in the process of trying to make it down a freeway that is now 2" of washboard packed snow/ice with potholes, a block of ice dislodged from the roadway and took a chunk out of the protruding door sill (AKA "wing").
I am now left wondering why in heavens name this is considered a "Good Thing(TM)" as a part of the design of this car. I am half tempted to toss them and get some less protrusive specimens from a B6 A4 and paint them.....

Make sure to add it to your customer's invoice. Great opportunity??
to install a set of the Euro Trim instead??
(Just trying to look at the bright side if there is one) Maybe if the sill didn't take the damage, you would have had a big a$$ dent in the
side of your car?
