Open tech question
I noticed on my test drive of the S4, and others have mentioned as well, some twitchiness to the clutch. In particular, I found the 1-2 shift hard to do smoothly. Maybe I am a spaz. My problem could be neurologic, but as others have commented on it, I think it may be the car.
Does the S4 have a CDV (clutch delay valve) in the slave cylinder for the clutch? My Z4 had one (before I had it removed) and I had similar problems there with difficulty with smooth shifting while it was still functional. Once removed, the car is a joy to drive. BMW did it for durability of the warrantied components of the drivetrain (clutch is not warrantied) at the expense of the clutch. It prevented the shock to the drivetrain from a "wind it up to 5000 rpm and dump the clutch" maneuver. What it did for sane drivers is make the car hard to drive smoothly as the rate at which the clutch would engage was limited, regardless of how I pedalled. It also results in excessive clutch wear.
Any input would be appreciated
thank you

many have complained of this issue and blamed it on a variety of things >>
some say it's the clutch itself and are hoping aftermarket hi perf clutchs will help
Others say it's a DBW(drive by wire) issue and there is NO fix
And some think that a Short shifter is the answer..
Myself, I just think it's the way it is and I have no problem driving smoothly most of the time.
It seems more noticable to me when just ***** footing around town.
With spirited driving it seems smooth to me.
I think you will get used to it and have no problems.
ps..I have a strat SS and think it helps me.
No clutch delay valve that I have heard of yet.
just my opinion

I agree, the problem is more when I am trying to be "good" and just tooling around town.
