I was in the market for a sportwagon to replace an SUV. In the high performance category, it's a short list - S4 Avant and the V70R. I had to choose based on spec as neither car existed yet at the time I needed to make the order decision. Based on spec, the review isn't illogical. The front weight bias from the big V8 and the change in chassis dynamics by making the sedan a wagon was bound to affect performance. I ended up getting the V70R last month because it was about $8K cheaper than the S4, offered Navi, and offered performance that's comperable in all but the 5% of the time I'd be really pushing the car. A big V8 wins out over a high-strung I5 in smoothness but when you factor in the cost difference, GGT, and MPG the Volvo made more sense to me. (Note: this is my personal opinion and is in no way meant to imply the S4 isn't a great car)

And the USA is the home of Buick, the Cimarron, and other world class cars.
Andrew Frankle works for Autocar, the oldest car magazine in the world. He also worked for "Car" which is father co-founded. I would trust his judgement over yours.
I think you have an emissions problem.

the S4 and M3 as average 0-60 time will be low 5 (yes for both) and for day to day driving the S4 wins hands down, for that fly by the seat drive its the M3.
