Default Our minimum load rating for tires is 93W, right?

I searched the archives and I'm 99% sure this is the correct min load rating, but wanted to be sure before ordering some new rubber.

Tire Rack's upgrade garage seems to confirm this as well by only listing tires that meet 93+ load ratings, but wasn't sure if they were just being overly conservative.

TIA

Default Long answer to a short question...

Joe - this is based on my understanding and quick research on the topic. After I bought 91Y A/S tires I looked into this...I created this quick spreadsheet to get it right in my mind. Hopefully you find it useful and accurate.

The min load rating "you" should run is based on max weight you carry around in the car. Audi takes "their" max cargo weight + curb weight and determines "95". You'll see the rationale in the spreadsheet...It's very peculiar that the equation works out to EXACTLY the load rating of a "95" tire - otherwise, I would suspect that this is NOT an exact science due to the shifting loads each tire experiences when running through turns, accelerating, braking, etc....oh well, hope this helps.

Default I would stick with 94 or higher...

I had problems with bubbles on lesser rated tires, eventually ended up with 94 rated tires on 17" wheels and after 10K miles no problems.

Default Wow...you're not messing around! This actually REALLY does clear it up actually...

...thanks for passing along the info w/ all of the details. I never knew so much went into the load ratings on tires. Maybe this is why I got 2 bubbled sidewalls in my PS2s with a 93 load rating?
