pics of my V1/remote display install...
main unit location. The cord running to the fuse box was much easier to hide than on my B5. Completely hidden from view.

Remote display location. I like having the display in this location as I find it's the best spot to catch my eye. I cut and angled a small block of wood to get the display at the perfect height. I painted the block black so it blends in very nicely and attached with velcro so I can remove easily. If you telescope the wheel out all the way, you can feel a hole in the bottom left of the liner so I fed the cord from the fuse area through the hole to the display. I had to drop the knee wall in my B5 and but didn't even have to that with this one. I'm very pleased with it so far.

I can't get the main unit to fit above my rear view mirror
the cab must be different. I have mine mounted to the right (passenger side) of the rear view mirror. I had it where you have yours on my allroad which is a much preferred placement.

Mine v1s in the same place. And the mirror is still quite adjustable
You just have to figure out how deep to install the v1 towards the windshield, and then you can easily move around the mirror.
As for your remote display, I think you'll be happier with Jim Wuerch's design/location. How do you get your hand in where you have it to mute the sucker?
Anyway, paging Miwa.

Nick, is that secured w/ the windshield mount?
I tried that, and when you're standing in front of the car, it stuck out like a woodie in a girl's locker room.
I've noticed that when cops do pull you over, they scan your windshield & dash pretty thourghly. Probably looking for all sort of things, like a bag of white powerd, or a knife. But prob. for radar detectors too, trying to decide if they should give you a break or not.
Not that you were necessarily going for stealth, just assuming...

I've been pulled over, nearly arrested, they didn't see the detector
I have mine in the same location, you can't notice it at all from the front of the car, and most passengers have no idea it's there or that it's not part of the car until I push the button to mute.

Ok, here it is again, my remote install location

Just take the display part out of it's case, and wedge it in. Since part of the dash is squishy, it will stay in with force alone.
It looks suprisingly like it belongs there, and it's thin enough you can't really see the guts of it when it's wedged in.

More pics
