Playthepuck: you're right! Hot weather does confuse the hell out of Audiopilot.

At low volumes it sounded like I was at the outer limits of a radio sation; the volume was all over the place. Interestingly, it seemed to get tripped up mostly by its own bass notes. I tried turning the fans off (which were on full attack) and it may have helped, but it certainly didn't eliminate the problem. The only thing that helped was to turn the volume up to level ten or so, but I didn't want to listen to it at level ten so I just turned it off. Problem solved.
As I said, if I turned the volume up to level ten things would improve, but when I switched from FM to SAT mode (which, as everybody knows, is quieter) the problem returned and disappeared only when I raised the volume even further. This leads me to believe that Audiopilot disregards what the head unit claims its volume level is and is completely reactionary. In other words, when music is played at or above a certain volume, the stereo is able to drown out whatever causes Audiopilot to freak out and the problem goes away.
Maybe you've already figured this out, but I wanted to throw my two cents in anyway.

Our order sheets described something similar to AudioPilot, but I never found any specific descriptions of it in anything we got with our early S4's.
Might be any interesting item to tease out - another mid model year addition?

you DON'T have AudioPilot, you just have the old Speed Volume Control.
If you don't see that option or are not able to adjust it (off-5) you have the Bose AudioPilot and you probably have this problem in your car.
