Posible to jack the rear of the car from under the rear tow hook?
I searched the B6 A4 forums and quite a few people seem to jack the rear end with a floor jack under the rear tow hook. I looked under there and this area does not look very strong to me. It would be great to put jack stands in the stock location if this were possible. Does anybody know if the tow hook is connected to the frame in any way? I don't want to smush the rear of my car with the jack.

It is possible to put jack stands under stock location with...
a floor jack. Use floor jack on one end of the stock location, it's about 8" or so wide. then position jack stand at the other end of the 8" exposed area. It's tight but there should be just enough room unless either your jack or jack stands are larger than standard size. Just be careful with the lip on jack or jack stand does not contact the body. I made some small spacers to keep the lips off the body (oohh that sounds nasty) :-)

Absolutely not.

That's your spare tire well under there. Put a jack under there and you will smoosh it...leaving you to drive with the spare in your lap.

ummm, no. I have done it countless times, so has my dealership tech.*edit* pic included now
It is perfectly fine. matter of fact, I just did it at Achtunings shop yesterday to get my car up high enough to get on the lift.
The car sat like this for the majority of the day while I worked on the body kit.

Pulling the car to get it out of a ditch is momentary...
and it involves a force in a different direction altogether. Putting a jack *underneath* it, and pushing up into the wheel well (and leaving it there) is different.
Every seen what happens to an indy car when a tire kisses a wall? Those suspensions are very very strong when absorbing normal forces encountered at speed, but the minute you apply a different force to the suspension, they snap like twigs.
We can go back and forth about this...however there is no need. The poster has enough information to make an informed decision.
