What's the proper procedure for pitting several dealers against each other??? Does or doesn't one play the middle man?? Obviously, we want to get the best deal possible!

get offers for what you want. Make sure the offers are on the "same car". Then take the deals to the other dealer etc... and start to work until your happy.

I ordered my car from "Dealer A" and four months later (long story) my car arrived. By that time I was no longer satisfied with paying MSRP as "Dealer A" insisted upon, so I searched for a similar car on the lot, found one, and drove to "Dealer B" to check it out. "Dealer B" was more anxious to get rid of its car than "Dealer A", so I was able to negotiate a pretty good price.
I then conducted negotiations with "Dealer A" via cell phone; I was literally sitting in "Dealer B's" car the whole time. Long story short, I was able to get the car I ordered for a pretty good chunk off of MSRP. This was a Wagon with a 6MT, which was, and maybe still is, a pretty hard-to-find combo.

Take the best price quote to the dealership with the higher quote and have tham beat it. If they do, take that deal back to the other dealer and see if thay will beat that deal. If you really want to get into it, Get quotes from 3 dealers. BTW I did this with 2 dealers. You will see who is really interested in selling a car. I did it entirely over the phone. It is also beneficial to deal with a dealer who has a nunber of S4s on his lot. This can be determined by going onto autotrader.com and doing a new car search. You may also find some dealers that might the car you want on his lot. Better yet, find 2 dealers that have cars that you would buy off the lot! Good luck. Over the phone there is a lot less pressure.

Worked out great for you, but dealer A would have been stuck with whatever you ordered had you walked.
This is why things like the "BMW Individual" options (custom paint colors, upholstery, etc.) are not available in the U.S. - dealers would be stuck with them if you walked.
(This is also why most dealers have a policy of making deposits non-refundable once your order enters production...)
