Default Question RE: B6 S4 engine? (M)

Please excuse my ignorance, but I am a BMW owner and know little about Audis. That being said, I am considering a B6 S4 as my next car. Q: Is the engine (?4.2 L?) in the S4 the same as the 4.2 liter engine in the A6 4.2 and the Allroad 4.2?

Same as the new A6. The old A6 and Allroad had an older version of it.

Default I believe they are variations of the same engine platform

I believe the 4.2 exists in a number of "flavors." A8, S8, 4.2 A6, S6, allroad, Touareg (sp?), RS6 (w/ 2x turbos), S4....others? Variations in tuning some parts, etc.

Default The B6 S4's V8 is different. The A6, A8 and All Road's version drive the accessories via belts...

In the front of the engine. The S4 and the upcoming new A6 have the newer version of that V8. Because the B6 S4 is a smaller car with a lot less room under the hood, they shrank the motor to make it fit. They did this by moving the accessory drive to the rear of the motor and making it a chain drive vs belt drive on the others.

I believe the new A6 goes back to the same block as the Old A6/A8 & Allroad...

Nope, it's the new one. I'm not sure if the blocks are even differnet though.

Default no its chain driven but its the same size block as the old ones...

the s4 has a shortened block to fit into the car. I believe the new A6 has the same size but is reveresed and chain driven.

Default The allroad's 4.2, the 4.2 in the new A8, and the 4.2 in the new A6...

...all have timing chains and the rear mount just like the B6 S4. Only the current A6 and the old A8 had 4.2's with belts in the front.

Default I've never read anything that said the block is shortened. The chain drive took off 2 in.

"To fit the engine in the narrow engine bay, the chain drive for the camshafts and ancillaries was moved to the output end of the V8, reducing its length by 55mm."

Of course I really have no idea beyond what I have read. If you can find it somewhere than I'm probably wrong. : D

http://www.europeancarweb.com/firstlook/0304ec_s4audi/index.html</a

Default I just saw the new A6 4.2 in person..

and the engine looks just like the S4's. As does the Allroad 4.2's. I was under the impression that these cars are the only ones to share the S4's new chain driven engine.
