Yes they are illegal, although I do not believe they can anylonger be confiscated in Virginia. I am also told that some localities actually have radar detector "detectors" and can stop you and give you a citation for simply having it in your car and powered on.

If you get pulled over and they use a radar detector detector, most good ones will block that detector and wont be able to be found. You could also get one "secretly" built into your car. Although they cost more, they dont attach to the dash, but behind the grill.

I take along an old obsolete radar detector and keep it where I can get to it easily. If I get pulled over I hide the V1 and leave the POS detector visible. If they take that one, who cares?

A friend of mine who lives there got one a few years back. He was so excited to have his first radar detector. He got the V1, had it hardwired, mounted above his mirror. It was as stealth as the V1 gets.
Well, one day he gets pulled over. The cop notices the V1, makes my buddy pull it off the windshield and hand it to him. The cop then slowly walked over to the driver's front wheel of the car and placed the shiny new V1 just in front of the tire. He then slowly walked back over to the window and said..."start your car and pull away, and I'll let you go.....stay parked here and you get a ticket". So my friend, not quite really understanding what was going on and a bit freaked out about the super-trooper, just drove away, right over his brand new $300 V1.
Moral of the story, if you're going to use a radar detector in VA, be super sneeky about it.
