Rattle clank chatter noise on cold start. I've STFA but nothing else...
posted in a while. I found posts talking about he secondary air pump or maybe chains. (it is not the rolling abs init.) Any additional info would be greatly appreciated. I have 1400 miles until my 5k but don't think I will be able to reproduce the noise for the dealer. Really annoying...

Normal, apparently the chain tensioners bleed off on shutdown,
it takes a second or so for the oil pressure to come up and pull the chains tight. If you see the back end of the engine with the chain covers removed its easy to see why you would rattle with slack chains.
I have about 5800 miles and it seems to happen much less frequently now. But I don't know about most everyone else.

You're preaching to the choir...
Read some of my earlier posts, I'm experiencing the same thing. My car is at the dealership now for the second time. First time they had turds in their ears. But I gotta try again. Although brief, the noise is too abnormal. I will re-post when I get my baby back. -Its so hard being separated from my car now. At least they gave me a nice new A6 as a loaner.

1.8 liters do that too
I don't know if it is the same sound but I borrowed a 1.8 Avant a while back and when I started it up in the morning (in my sound- reflecting garage), it would rattle an clamor--sounded kinda like a dry clutch on a motorcylcle, if any of you have heard that.

I owned a B6 A4 1.8T prior and it did make noise...
at cold start but as not loud and abnormal. It sounded more like bearing chatter until oil pressure came up. Also the 1.8t is belt driven. The noise we are talking about is serious and it's loud. If it's chain / chian tensioner noise and it's normal I will accept that. At this point I would expect the dealer svc dept to have explaintion or solution w/o repeated visits.
I still love the car, just annoyed by the clank clank clank during cold starts so loud it turns heads.

Cool. Thanks for the pic and the explanation...
The noise I hear certainly is NOT a clanking sound. It's more of a shudder, like an upper intake cover is completely loose, if you can imagine the sound that would make, but again, it lasts for a second. And it's not consistent. It doesn't happen every morning. It may go away for 2 days and all of a sudden be back. It's not loud enough for anyone outside the car to hear (I don't think). Your explanation is believable. Hopefully you're right. Thanks again.
