Default Replacement and key programming question.

Does anyone know where the coded immobilizer chip is located in the key? Is it in the flip out metal blade of the key or is it part of the electronics in the key body? I just bought a spare key with an uncut blade for my 2004 S4 on ebay for $30. The electronic serial #s in the remote all match so programming should not be an issue. However, what about the immobilizer coding? The local Atlanta audi dealer says he can cut and code the key for $100. But only if the key has the chip. I'd hate to spend the money if it doesn't work in the end. Anyone have any input on this? Thanks....

Default Chip is in the blade. I had one a guy in England cut for me from a (more)

photo. Key works in locks and ignition, but no luck with programing. Dealer said because blade was not Audi made. Dealer made new for me and no problem. He, however, charged more than $100. If the blade has no numbers, letters, or other "writing" on it, then probably not Audi.

Default What do you by " cut a key from a photo?" (more)

Also, kind of a dumb question, but if the key worked in the locks and the ignition, then why would you need to program it? If the doors open and the car starts, what else would you need? I was under the impression that if the key was not coded, then it would not work in the ignition or the car would start and die in a few seconds. Thanks for the input....

Default The key worked mechanically but not electrically. (more)

It would start the car but then the "immobilizer" kicked in and the car would die. The gentleman in England was able to use a photo of the original as a pattern and cut the groove in the key blade. I found him on E-bay.

Default The the uncut blade says HAA on one side of it. I'll stop by the dealer tomorrow and see if they

can code it. On the phone they told me they can cut and program it for $100.
