I think that they have gained significant badge prestige over the past few years.
Audi has been gaining, while BMW (with its crappy new designs) has been doing nothing but losing market share. Lets see how well the new M5 sells. BMW is blowing it. Getting ugly, and waaaaay overpriced.
Mercedes is playing the power game, but their normal (non-amg) line will always be the top mark of German luxory.
