When the RS4 was on the dyno, the results that came back are stunning. What to think? Are the numbers that Audi claims correct?

http://www2.rs6.com/forum/showthread.php?s=305470f1eb9f9aed7e3db25c2261620e& amp;threadid=8742</a

Default Re: How about a nice 400 HP?

After looking at the graphs and reading up on how manufactures make claims I'm guessing the 420 HP is perhaps a tad optomistic. However, going by weight comparisons from the older RS4 and some other cars in the same weight and HP range, then comparing them all I would guess that it can't be far off to be pulling the 0-60 and 0-125 numbers. As I wait for my RS4 I can still have a hugr grin with a nice even number of 400 HP. Numbers are only a part of what this car is.

True, but -18% & -13% are big percentages.

Once the U.S. car magazines get a hold of it they'll see what's up and get to the bottom of it

Default if it bothers you, don't buy one.

AFAIK, no one who's driven the car has complained about it.

Default It is difficult to sort out because....

Auto manufacturers quote HP at the crank and the dyno measures HP at the wheel. You have to come up with a correction factor to account for driveline losses when converting from wheel to crank. The correction factors are notoriously difficult to nail. Also ambient temperature, altitude/barometric pressure, humidity, AWD vs. RWD, etc. all introduce significant variability into comparisons. Dynos have their place, but you get the most by sequentially comparing cars on the same dyno.

Don't worry about the HP anyway, the RS4 has a nice flat torque curve and should perform quite well on the street or at the track. If you want raw HP over a near luxury AWD vehicle with phenomenal track prowess, then the RS4 may not be the best choice anyway.

Default yes, assuming they're testing a US street version and not a pre-production model, which...

happens all to often in their scramble to be the first to have it splashed all over the pages of their magazine.

Default Well this car has been selling for over 6 months in Europe so when they test them here they won't...

be pre-production. I'm sure they'll have the exact car that we're buying in the U.S. The only problem is unless someone tells them about this dyno variance, then I doubt they'll even look into it. They will just be too excited to beat the snots of out it and grin.

Default true, i guess pre-production wasn't the right term...US spec model would...

be more of a concern. the mags are dependant on what audi sends them, unlike when already in full swing here they can get it supplied by a dealer.

Default Keep in mind that any AWD vehicle will have worse than average driveline loss...

though based on the statistics shown in that thread, that particular RS4 under those particular conditions may not have been able to deliver 420 hp.

There have also been tested RS4's in Germany which didn't meet Audi's published performance figures.

We'll have to wait and see. I wouldn't be concerned yet.
