According to autoweek S4 Avant will base at $47,500, and it has been discussed that it will apparently have a guzzler tax of some kind. The v70R will base for $38,325 without this tax. Is the s4 Avant going to be worth the extra $10,000 ??? Opinions??

...that's a tough call. I think the V70 & S70 R cars are very good value for money (like the B5 S4)
It will depend how badly you want the styling & V8 power & handling of the S4 over the V70.

...and turbo lag coupled with automatic transmission hesitation and torque converter losses made for more sluggish acceleration response than the A4/S4. Basically just not as much a drivers car, still nice, and the specs are good/comparable, but just nowhere near as responsive all around. Not sure about the newer ones, but I would guess that relatively speaking the same would apply...

again depends on what you want. Smaller sportier handling with a bit of extra room, then go Avant. A wagon that has a lot of room that happens to go pretty fast but loses some maneuverability, V70R.
Plus you got to throw in the price differential as you mentioned.

i hate arguing this as it's not the most important stat...but they will be close, and depending on how conservative the Audi's time is (don't know if volvo is conservative ussually, not from my experience).

Off boost performance of volvo's hasn't been attractive historically. But I'm looking forward to driving the V70-R. If the Haldex is like the one on my TT, the Volvo is basically a FWD with occasional help from the rear wheels, unlike the S4 Avant which is a lot more balanced.
Of course I'm looking hard at a Subie STi too... (ugly SOB). I LOVE the driver-adjustable center diff!!
