hello all, just got back spending time in chicago where I was able to get some seat time in the rs4.
Better thottle response and more noticible power down low are two things that are clearly better. I did notice the nice subtle interior and exterior differences as well. The rs4 reminds me of a chipped b5 s4 compared to a non-chipped b5 s4.
Other than that I was not blown away by any other performance differences, certainly not worth the s4 + ~25k imo. We all know that the rs4 is a superior car. I dont know about anyone else but Id much rather have the s4 plus a 350whp EVO RS track car (for around 19k, which is about what mine is worth according to bluebook).
The thottle response thing really bugs me its feels like the s4 was purposely detuned much like how the old S54 M Coupe was detuned to fit neatly below the power and performance capabilities of the M3 (both cars had the same engines). I remember having both cars and how much of a difference the conforti chip made in the m coupe. Yea i know its different in the case of the s4 v. rs4 but i still dont see why the s4 cant have better thottle response in stock form.

Some of the differences you feel are:
Higher compression ratio in the RS4
Direct injection vs manifold injection
Lighter flywheel
Lighter piston and ring kit
4-2-1 header
BTW, if the RS4 you drove had less than 5000 miles on it, you weren't seeing full power.

and i should be for the extra ~20-25k. Considering the price, I think i was expecting m5 performance when i drove the rs4. ill stick with the s4 + evo rs combination for now.

but the dealer said they would have a local interior shop correct that. as RI RS4 said the engine was green in the vehicle i drove, so i guess it wasnt at potential(which, IMO, is the worst selling point ever). i also brought a friend who has no clue about cars...the first thing he said was "so why the hell is this more, cause it looks a little different???".
the engine to me felt a little more strung out, i liked the extra staying power but in the states it would rarely be experianced.
i think there are better choices out there and audi needs to ditch the NA thing...thats BMW's deal. I love audi's but i think this product line has pushed me to go to another brand, which stinks cause i still havent found a car as visually appealing on the inside as an Audi.

imo its slightly better than the e46 m3 in terms of performance. However, the Rs4 does do things that the M3 and M5 cant do.
Believe me i WANTED the rs4 to be the better car but in all honesty after driving it I dont think it is in the same realm as the m5. Maybe im wrong, just my opinion after spending a good amount of time driving each of the cars mentioned above.
However, after driving the rs4 i do feel that the s4 is more of a value than I had previously thought.
cheers

FSI is more functional in Europe, in that Stratified mode (lean burn) is enabled for higher fuel economy. It is disabled in the US because of the crappy high sulfur fuel on this side of the pond. However, both European and US engines are identical when running in homogeneous mode, which is the mode used under full power.
