Default S4 engine removal every 90,000 miles, does anyone here know about this?...

Someone on the A4 forum was told that Audi is thinking of recommending an engine removal every 90,000 miles for the the replacement of the chain drive at the back of the motor. RE/RE must be at least 10 to 15 hours plus parts. Big $$$.

If it's true, then I think I know when I'll be selling it.

Default They would have to remove the engine to replace the chain.

Engine chains have come a long way from back in the day, but the S4's appear to be pretty long, and it looks like it has four of them. I'm sure they are true roller chains, and are prestretched, but they could still stretch more..throw off timing, and if it actully breaks...well, I think you get the picture.

Default Leave it to Audi to make a NA that has all the downsides of turbo

Ok, so let me get this straight...

Thanks to "vorsprung der technic" or however you spell that...

*) We need a 4.2L V8 to get about the same power as a BMW 6
*) It has as unpredictable a throttle as if it had a turbo
*) It is going to have *scheduled* maintenance requirements costing about as much as turbo replacemnt
*) It gets the fuel economy of a Cadillac Escalade and a Range Rover*

* it does have slightly higher EPA than these cars, by a couple MPG. But in everyday driving, it gets 12-16 mpg, and worse if I drive it hard. My everyday driving is not slow, sure, but it's in the median range of the car's capabilities.

Default I would guess because of the yellow plastic chain guides.

Looks like the chain tension for the auxillary shaft relies heavily on them.
Are we looking at counterclockwise rotation from this direction?

Default By the time you get 90K miles, you'll want something new any way

Another advantage of leasing vs purchasing

Default Not me. I genuinely wanted to put 500k mi on this car

One of the main reasons I sucked up the extra cost and a couple of the other negatives is that on paper, this is the "perfect car."

It's decent sized, it's awd, it's a wagon, and it has fantastic performance. I don't know exactly what my minimum requirements are for the "perfect car," but I know this car exceeds all of them. So, there should never be a reason to sell it.

Granted, at 10 years w/ 250k mi on it, it's probably going to be pretty beat up, and it might not be my "nice car" any more. But assuming I have a family then and a need for multiple cars, I still don't think there should be a reason to sell it.

Realistically, it sounds like the reasons to sell are going to be that the car will have problems, not that it will ever fail to meet my requirements for being "the perfect car."

Default Audi allows 10 hours to remove and replace an engine.

Mine was just done and will get exact figures from the paperwork this week.

Its a pretty clean job. Not sure that this would have to be done at 90K as others have also pointed out that chains have come a long way.

I'm concerned over the chain guides and chain tensioners.
