I'm looking to buy an '04 6speed with metallic paint, premium, premium audio, + heated seats. I live in PA. On Edmunds, car lists at $49,920 (base car $45,650). Does this include federal gas guzzler tax of $1700? If so, how does that number get figured into the true invoice price? Simply added on, or discounted as well? For example, Edmunds lists the invoice on that car as $45,047 - would the "true" invoice be $46,747?
Are any dealers you know of discounting off LIST more than $2500? Looks like that's what Philly dealers are doing or thereabouts.

discount on this car when it has only been out for 6 months. $2,500 is way more than I got off, and I didn't argue one bit. I wanted the car, they had the car, I bought the car. I'm sure you will spend the next month trying to figure out where you can save another $100 instead of just buying the car and enjoying it. Sorry if I'm coming off a bit rude, but I just don't see what saving a couple of dollars is going to achieve in the grand scheme of things. Just buy the car and enjoy it.

The gas guzzler tax is an option so you get to pay tax on a tax. It is a bit like the delivery charge. You pay what the dealer pays.Good luck.

i cant see how people would just walk into a car dealership and buy a car without discussing the pricing first hand. I would think thats common sense, but then again some people dont care if they pay more than the next guy. I say haggle as much as a possible! Why pay more than you have to if its only as easy as voicing your opinion and being firm? some people baffle me.

I did negotiate the price of my S4 some, but I didn't call 10 different dealerships to try and find out if they would beat the deal I got by $100 or so. I knew I wanted the car, the dealer told me they don't discount the S4's, but would come off the sticker a little bit. We negotiated for a whole whopping 10 minutes and they made me a reasonable offer, so I took it. I didn't have to think about it for a few days, I didn't have to call any other dealers, and I really didn't care what invoice for the car was, because I knew it was irrelevant to the S4. I'm not an idiot, and the only car I have ever paid full list for is in the picture on my signature (that car was non-negotiable). And when I got my S4, a good deal to me was just getting the car.

it's a simple business negotiation. The dealer is trying to make every nickel he can and leave as little money on the table as possible - which is exactly what the customer is trying to do. Why pay $49K when $48K will seal the deal? I simply asked the dealer for bottom line price - and was told he'll discount the car $2500 - which I'm comfortable with. Just because you may not have gotten your best possible price, don't knock others for being good negotiators.

but it's a shame you didn't wait - I hear they're now discounting them quite a bit. One of my all time favorite cars.
