I think a lot of people have this misconception about Benzes these days, yes there are certain lines of Benzes, like the S430 and S500 that aren't meant to be taken to performance extremes and aren't necessarily a "driver's" car, but neither is a 745Li or an A8L. The E320 isn't a driver's car either, but who ever said the A6 3.0 or the 525i or 530i was much of a performance car. When you talk about what a driver's car is you have to be specific in what we are defining here. Let's face it, perhaps with the exception of the A8L there is no big luxury car that can touch an S-Class. There is not BMW or Audi that even comes close to the SL or the CL. Mercedes knows their market well, they don't try to get into the crosshair territory with Audi and BMW, because people who buy Mercedes-Benzes want luxury and design without compromise, and if they do want the added performance they buy an AMG which gives them a combination of both, except the performance comes in extremely liberal doses. So for those of you who like to dog Benzes or their owners, before you pass judgement understand what the company stands for, just simply comparing it to an Audi or BMW is overlooking many underlying factors in why Mercedes makes their cars like they do.

See if I was getting a 3 series, I'd want M3, Corvette --> Z06, and Porsche --> Turbo or GT2...
And Mercedes --> only AMGs...
Those who say the M3 is too harsh are missing something. My dad had a 911 then had hip replacement surgery so he wanted something comfortable and he got his M3 with 19s. We don't think that car is to harsh at all.
