S4 Reliability?

A car forum is an excellent place to exchange information about specific cars. Naturally car owners who are having problems will share them with readers of the forum to seek advice and to determine how widespread the problem is. The vast majority of owners who have no problems will not post and say they don't have any problems; they merely remain silent. To make matters worse, some outspoken posters who have bought a lemon will use the forum to vent their frustration. So don't let any forum scare you away from a car. Go to J D Powers or Consumer Reports for a good quality evaluation of the car you want.

I was prepared for the worst, especially being an early adopter and all. But much to my astonshment, Audi nailed this car, it's been my most trouble-free one to date. I keep waiting for something to break, but nothing.

obviously the BMW is a hell of lot more reliable (ugly, yes but that's a different matter). Remember, only those with problems are going to voice them on these forums. ALL cars have SOME problems, some more than others. I've had 6 Audis including 3 A6's and 2 S4's (an '01.5 and an '05) and have absolutely loved them all - they're terrific, reliable, satisfying cars. Yeah, some of the very early build '04 S4s had some problems, but they've been basically fixed and the cars are wonderful.

Here's a copy of one my previous postings....
The S4 is a good car, so don't be too upset.
Every manufacturing run of cars will have problems. I was firm believer in the "reliability" of Japanese cars, but unfortunately found myself using the warranty for repairs more frequently than I liked.
Thank God I don't keep cars for long!
Toyota Tacoma - brakes/tranny problems
Lexus GS300 - rear seal @ 20,000 miles
Infiniti I35 - Plastic interior (QC problems)
Infiniti G35 - brakes/elec motors/ign. switch
Infiniti M45 - Voice ECU 3 times @ $4k each
- Shifting problems - no fix
- Stopped dash rattle w/ pennies
- strange rattles from rear
- Engine drank 2 quarts oil every 3k miles
As you can see, owning Japanese is not always bliss. Infiniti threw $12,000 worth of parts at my M45, but could never get the voice command to work properly.
Mind you that these are cars I bought and sold in the last 4 years. With Infiniti it seemed like the more money I spent on the car, the more problems I had with it. (not a good investment at all)
Am I better off buying German? So far I'm ecstatic with 3000 miles. This car has a soul and, more importantly, a really good warranty.
Best of luck to you.
