Well, I finally got my S4 back from the dealership this afternoon. They were able to get the shift fork from Germany to replace the defective rod on that part that had a rivet sheared off. I saw the part - the break was as if the rivet was cut straight through, and the rod was just swinging freely where it should be fixed to guide the shifter into place. The 1st gear synchro was found to be pristine, and was not replaced. The shifter now works the way it's supposed to, without hanging up between neutral and first. Finally, this car feels the way it should. Now, I can get around to enjoying it the way it should be enjoyed. My dealer, Audi Willow Grove, in PA, did a great job with acknowledging, diagnosing, and fixing the problem - they never denied anything was wrong, the way some dealers have. I'm asking for a 2 year extension from AoA for my transmission - we'll see what happens with that, but my service manager thought that was pretty reasonable.

it was amazing to see the damaged part - the rivet was sheared off as if cut - almost looked like it was sabotaged at the factory! Dealer said they've never seen this problem before. I'm just glad it's fixed. I'll be following every shift to make sure it's right, but the neutral to first shift is SO different from what it was when I first picked up the car, I'm convinced it's fixed!
