Default S4 vs. M3

My .02 on the Battle Royale between the S4 and M3. I don't really care about 0-60 times because I never sit at a red light, red line the engine, and pop the clutch. I am much more interested in real world action represented by 30-70mph times. I would think that the torque in the S4 would make it world class in that category.

Has anyone seen the 30-70 times for the S4 and M3?

Richard

Default Link to real world test of 80 kmh+ testing (fixed link)

In gears 4/5/6, the S4 works the M3. 80 kmh is roughly 50 mph. See link.<ul><li><a href="http://forums.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/e46m3/forum.php?postid=954698&amp;page=1">Auto Motor und Sport S4 vs. M3</a></li></ul>

Default M3 is significantly quicker

from 60-125 mph. M3 does it in 12.9 seconds while the S4 does it in 14.5. M3 laps the Hockemhein F1 circuit 1.8 seconds quicker on a lap that's only 1:16.3 seconds long. That's a beating. The S4 is quicker on the rolling tests because of the extra torque of the V8. On the road, a good M3 driver won't be caught "off-boost".

"a good M3 driver won't be caught "off-boost"."

I don't understand that statement. The M3 is neither supercharged nor turocharged.

There is a LOT more potential left in the 4.2 than the BMW motor

Default I suspect 'off the cam' would be a better phrase.

I've driven the M3 convertible and wasn't particularly impressed for the astronomical price. I'd rather have the M5. Or better yet the M3-that-wasn't-homologated-after-two-years-of-stock-racing. God help us if BMW stuffs their V8 in an M3 and sells it on the street.

I think BMW has fixed this issue and had the cajones to extend the warranties to 6 yr/100k IIRC.

Default I think the poster doesnt want to worry about being off-boost(off-cam)?

thus S4 will be a better option IMHO.
