Sounds like it's cutting the gas, like a fuel shut off would do.

Not sure--but I have a feeling it just closed the throttle butterfly instantly instead of slowly.

Default I think it's the cold weather we are having in the Bay Area!!!
Yeah, righ! Sounds like the exact thing that happened to me! I was also really embarrassed with the revs. However, if you let the clutch out while not in gear it'll drop back down to idle.
