that the linkage really is a problem with my specific car, and that it's not a problem that's inherent to the B7S4. I will pursue this until it's made right.

And yes, I'm going to give the dealer a call tomorrow and get this thing resolved. The more I drive it, the more I'm convinced it's just not right. Damn, I want to LOVE this car....

when it decides to do that, it's pretty darn hard and I have to put it in 2nd before sliding smoothly into 1st.

met with Service Manager this AM who assured me that the car would be made right - getting Audi District Service Manager to look at the car. It may need a new syncho, hopefully not a whole new trans, but it will be corrected. A fine German car shouldn't shift this way. I've had a slew of Audis, all manuals, and none of them shifted like this - including my '05 B6S4! Fortunately, the dealership has the same view as I do.
