what's gonna be your track car. You should pick up a B5 S4 to beat on. It would be perfect to mod as a track car.

B5 S4 is a poor track car for the money. He could do much better.

I'm probably about three years off from doing so, but I'd like to know your idea of a good foundation for building a track car.

Default Spec Miata is the biggest one I think of...

or a E36 M3 or ....

E30, E36, E34, Mcoupe, Mroadster BMW's, 944 or 968 Porsche's, Miata (with hp increase), RX-7, Mustang Cobra R, IRS Cobra, C5/C6 Corvette, or even a Radical if you can snag one under $30k.

All are better choices for a purpose built track car IMO. S4's are fun, but make too many compromises if all you need is a toy for the track.

If you are fixed on AWD, pick up a DSM, Evo, or Subie.

I'd just get an elise brand new or slightly used. And then, after you can say you can actually handle that car on track, maybe you could do this to it:
