manual metering IS the best way.
It's the only way I work, as that's what I learned when in school.
These images were underexposed, but given the tones in the scene, any good camera, even on Auto would come closer than they were.
There just was something mis-set on the camera.
Live and learn....and shoot, shoot, shoot...
