it seems to happen when the car is left in the garage for 2 days. i turn the key to start it up to 2 times with nothing. the third time normally makes it start. everything after that seems normal. it only really happens when it sits for at least 2 days.
Battery?
or
Brake Switch?

I'm not sure if there is a difference between the clutch relay switch and the starter switch. But other than that I am thinking I may have to replace the starter...

Actually after it didn't start a few times I would get an electrical burning smell in the car.
took it to the dealer they replaced the starter motor free of charge. I think it has something to do with the electrical surge to the starter motor. Too much current perhaps?

just had the identical, intermittent issue with our 2004 S4. Problem manifested itself only upon the first attempt to start the car in the morning. once it started, thereafter it worked fine.
We had the starter motor replaced and it is solved.
