Test drove the 2010 S4
So I was in Denver weighing the options. Supercharge the 4.2 or consider getting the new v6. So I headed over to the dealer to see if maybe by chance they had the new S4. "Yup" said the sales guy, "But it is only for serious drivers " So after convincing him that I was a "Serious driver" we went out for a spin. First the looks. I am partial to the avant, so the sedan never looks right to me (FYI, they are not importing the Avant). I hate the rear end. The rest of the car is excellent, but does not turn my head like the S5. The ride height appears to be the same as the b6-7 but with 19". So that does not look right at all. Not sure why they did not lower the ride height with adding a larger rim...mmm??
The interior is fabulous! What an improvement. Really the biggest improvement on the car. I can't say enough...you just need to check it out.
The drive:
I live at altitude (8300 ft to be exact) so I have never truly enjoyed the full HP/tq from my 4.2. So when I got behind the wheel of a supercharged V6, the initial acceleration was awesome. However, I was not blown away. All I could think about was... imagine what mine will feel like with a supercharger. I will get to feel my true HP and then some!
Finally the sound. It does not even come close to the 4.2. The gas mileage is probably the one positive. Perhaps the labor will be easier since the engine is smaller.
By doing the mods to my car (exhaust, sway bars) if you super charge the 4.2, you are sitting on a car that will blow the doors off of the new S4. If I was comparing stock to stock at altitude, I would pick the new S4 every step of the way. But with the new Super charger kits available for the 4.2, I just kept thinking something was missing from the new V6. Perhaps if I did not own the 4.2 I would think differently.
I am keeping the current 4.2 and will be looking to install the supercharger kit. What can I say? The V8 is just so much nicer IMO.

Same with me. My B6 S4 is paid for...so to get a loan of 30K+ to get the new S4..and no real HP gains, but you get the new interior and sport diff, to me its not worth it, since for 10K I can PES and have someting unique. If I was without the B6, then sure..wait one year and pick up a used one.

I dunno, mine sounds pretty subdued. I can feel the power but sometimes I forget I have a V8 under the hood.

I purchased 2010 s4 with s-tronic and still have my B6 6speed. Overall its a better car... the sound is the only area that needs help. However, shifting at high RPM in the s-tronic with the SC is a much sweeter sound than the V8 at high RPM. Once the chip comes into play for the 6SC = 400+hp without any additional mods the car will truly be amazing. I love my B6 but this car is advanced in everyway.

I noticed that you have a 2004 model with Alcantara. I am thinking about purchasing a 2010 S4 with Alcantara seats but is concerned about the wear. I generally keep my car for a very long time (about 10 yrs). What is your opinion on the Audi alcantara?

I'd skip the Alcantara, speaking from someone with it now. It will pil (think Fleece) over time and is annoying in hot weather (lots of back sweat). They have a 2-tone leather option on the new S4 that might be worth exploring.

Sour grapes....
You say the V6T sounds like a washing machine, eh? Maybe that's what it sounds like when it's several car lengths ahead and your last-gen V8 trying is revving to **** trying keep up! LOL!!!!
