Im thinking I need a little more space. Will the 3.6L engine do it for me since Im coming from a B7 S4 avant? Or should I go for the 4.2 cylinder. I dont think I need the acceleration the S4 has in an SUV but if anyone else has gone thru this transformation input is appreciated.

don't count on sub $2/gal gas being available for too long. Do you intend on towing anything or hauling a lot of passengers or cargo?

While its always more fun to drive the sedan the utility of the Q7 is great. It handles very well for an suv and travels (long hauls)very well...

I have three kids myself, and have been getting by without a vehicle as large as the Q7 simply because I don't want to drive anything that large. Granted, about 90% of people in my situation go large...

Im thinking its more of a wear and tear/ practicality issue. Ive had the S4 for two years and love it. Since then Ive had a baby and another is on the way. Im not sure the S4 is the ideal car for my current situation as a kid hauler / family vehicle. When it was just my wife and me it was a different story. Ive got some time before having to make a decision. Plus Im driving a lot more for work and have racked up almost 30K miles on the S4 in the past two years.
What we will probably end up doing is going large with the suv (toss up between Q7 and X5)and then picking up a nice low mileage 2007+ S4 or RS4 cabrio for my wife to drive. She drives less than 5K miles a year.
Another thought is the Q5 but I dont think that the Q5 is much bigger than what I currently have.

have not looked back. We were expecting our second child and needed 2 car seats and use of a stroller, and the Q was a perfect fit. We have logged over 30K miles and have had ZERO problems except for a radio glitch that was fixed in about 1/2 hr under warranty. The Q drives like a car and is spacious without being ponderous to drive around town. The 3.6 engine has been great. Has good torque and passing power, but is pushed a bit when driving up steep grades. If you are not going to haul with it, I'd go with the 3.6. We have gotten as high as 22-23 mpg on long trips at 70+mph. Best of luck...
