My wife said she was hearing a thumping noise from the back of her 2005 S4 Cab when she first turned the ignition on. She only heard it for a few seconds and it would go away. The sound did not occur if she turned on the ignition when the car was warm. The car ran fine warm or cold.

The sound was from the fuel pump so last night I changed the fuel filter. This seems to have corrected the problem. The car has 44,000 miles so I guess I’ll be changing the fuel filter every 30,000 miles as a part of routine maintenance. I’m surprise that Audi doesn’t recommend replacement intervals.
