RS6 has a different tip tranny
The tip tranny in the B6 S4 is totally different from the tip tranny in the RS6. Don't assume the S4 tip tranny is as heavy duty as the one fromthe RS6. According to AoA, the S4's tip tranny cannot even reliably handle the stock engine at 7000 RPM, so they have started limiting the shift points to 6300 RPM in the S4.

I thought torque is what messed up a trans?
Is this going on with other people? or can it be the tech just saying that so he doesn't have to look at it? wouldn't be the first time.
From 7000 down to 6300 seems to be pretty dramatic.
Also reading about the tip in the S4 B5 wasn't it the torque that would damage the trans. and wouldn't that be in the low rpms no high?

Torque was aplenty that's for sure...
all you needed was a chip and that would cause the car to ride on it's limits concerning clutch and tranny specs. The tranny syncros were just not made for the extra torque. I think it was 2001 when they started replacing busted syncros with a newer designed syncro, one with a hardened alloy. But you weren't going to get these preventatively, they were going to be installed only when your tranny failed.
Here's a pic of the busted syncro (sorry, old pic and not in focus, but you can see the wear....)
