Tire Pressure

I'd appreciate if some of you would weigh in on this one. Just had 2 new Toyo Proxes4 tires put on the front. Independent tire dealer said keep inflated to the specs recommended by Audi which is 39 psi in front and 35 psi in rear. A friend of mine (also S4 owner) contadicts the tire dealer and says I should be just below the max psi on the sidewall which is 50 psi. He is telling me at 45 psi I will be seeing better performance and better gas mileage. So what is it? Do I inflate to Audis specs or do I take it up to mid 40s? Also, the OEM tires were Conti SportContact2. Does that specific tire factor into what Audi engraves on the tire pressure table on the driver side pillar?
Thank you!
Thank you!

37/38 F, 40/41 R alleviates some understeer, car will feel 'lighter' in turns.

I have Toyo Proxes 4 all the way around on my 2004 Cabrio. I have bee using 41/42 front and 36/37 on the rear. The tires are wearing nicely and the computer says I have been getting 16-18 MPG (but I only beat on ot from tme to time, not all the time). In any event, experiment. Mid-40 is likely too high and less than the mid-30 way too low.
