An S4 is on my short list of potential new daily drivers. I'd be buying used. 2001 or so if turbo or 2004 or so if 4.2L V8.
Pros & cons to each? Not sure if I'd be better off w/the V8 ot turbo version. Extent of mods would be a couple minor bolt-ons & maybe a tune regardless.

This is a tough one, both are awesome in their own way.
I love the look of the b5, and think it's still the best looking audi a4 model out there, but then that's my opinion. I just sold my b5 a4, and am now considering getting a b5 s4.
B5 Pros
-highly tunable (for the same price as a B6, you would have one hell of a car)
-cheap price
-when modded, faster of the two
B6 Pros
-v8 rumble, it's very addictive
-lots of pull, no lag
-no turbo headaches
The B6 chassis is supposed to be something like 40% stiffer over the older B5. I don't think you can go wrong with either one, like I said, both are beautiful in their own way![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
enjoy!

I've had both, and for me, the Biturbo V6 was MUCH more enjoyable.
It's a bit smaller, more responsive, and is the perfect "do everything" car. It's fast when you want, and economical when you want (28 highway).
For me the V8 is a little too big, a little too heavy. Yeah, it sounds like a muscle car, but so what? And I struggle to get 20mpg on trips, even driving like an old man.
If VW brings in the Golf R/R20 (awd, 270hp), I will buy one in a second, as an almost perfect replacement for my first S4.

My answer depends entirely on your goals. I've owned both the bi-turbo S4 (stage 3) and now the B6 S4. From my perspective, the B6 is more refined, the B5 is more fun and better mileage... and significantly faster when upgraded.
Good luck!

Having owned both, I have to say that the B6 is more enjoyable-having a cab now compared to a sedan in the past, I can notice the added lbs, so the B5 BiTurbo is more "nimble" and lighter-but the stock exhaust and the added interior items (dual zone, xm, navigation plus) make the newer models more enjoyable. However, like the '65 mustang or the '67 camero or any 911, the B5 S4 will always be a classic looker. In my opionion one of the top 10 best looking cars of all time.
