Default V8 Engine

Sorry if this seems like an ignorant question but are the V8's in the new S4 anything like the old 2.8L V6's in terms of being interference engines? i.e., timing belt seizing = booboo for engine and big owiefor pocketbook?

Default

I believe the V8 uses a chain, not a belt.

Default yeah my understanding is this....

Timing belt, alternator and everything else is run off a metal chain belt that drives all of those and doesn't warp, break or bend. Hopefully this comes to be true. I haven't heard of any Euro S4's having problems with this, but they might change something on the way to the US release.... never can tell.

Default Yep, and it better be reliable. They moved it to the back of the engine to save space...

I think they'd have to pull the engine to replace it or work on it.

Default I believe I read that they have a breakaway shaft to protect the chain should any component lock up

One will probably have to pull the engine to fix - but you wont have to buy a new engine.

Default Right

you have to pull the engine but ... the chain is built for the engine's lifetime and service-free.

Btw ... same chain for US.

Default That's right... I knew there was a catch for working on it...

I remember reading that in European Car one month. However, I'm glad they've replaced the cumbersome "rubber" belts with metal that is guaranteed to work or they'll fix it free of charge.

Default The camshafts are driven by a chain and gears off the back of the eingine..

not a toothed belt on the front like current engines. Old V12 Ferraris used triple row chains for this purpose and they were indistructible.
