Unless the S4 was shifting early, he had the m3 to 60 both times
You can easily hit 60 in 2nd, and you don't see the m3 in the side window until a second into 3rd.

And why is that?
The guy in the S4 gave up. To be honest I wish he wouldnt have given up once he hit 3rd gear. Watch the top gear video where M3 vs S4 both manuals in the straight line 1/4 mile. M3 by 1 car length. I know the M3 is faster but it isnt that much faster. Also let us not forget it was an Avant!

because a stick M3 is quicker off the line
tests show about 2-3 tenth's in both 0-60 and 1/4 times for a stick vs. SMG M3 - that's another 3 car lengths on the S4 by 100mph or so...
if both cars are rolling uglier yet for the S4.

It's not about giving up...
It was fixed like that between the drivers, due to safety.
There's a corner and the speed was quite high.
The S4 beats the M3 up to about 200-350 meters.
Look at 1/4 mile times, the S4 is not so far behind and the M3 really needs good traction.
If not it will be really embarrasing for the BMW.
The M3 manual would be quicker if the driver is good.
M3 SMG and ESP is for anyone to drive fast.
