They are both really nice cars. The s60R is a Volvo, so it's very safe. I like the style of the R, very hot. Nice looking bumper too, kinda looks like the RS4 bumper IMO. Anyways, brembos all the way around, and their active suspension system is very hot: comfort, sport, and race. I heard the race program is very tight. Also, turbocharged 300 HP, 295 lb/ft engine is nice. And I think it's a haldex system, and it's FWD most of the time until it senses the slippage and then directs power to the rear wheels.
Now, the S4. Awesome v8 power. Quattro AWD. Recaro seats. Amazing suspension and braking power. Avant= best looking wagon in the world....(then again, I might be a little biased) Drive one, and your hooked.
I really feel the S4 speaks for itself, once you test drive it. But then again, I'm sure the Volvo is nice too. But, I picked the S4. And again, you are on the S4 board. :-p

5 cylinder engine with turbo and AWD.
Does it sound like an Audi made 10 years ago or the brand new Volvo to you...?![Big Grin](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
The S4 is faster in EVERY test I've seen.
V8 is much nicer, I promise. I drove the V70R and it's not that exciting.

Performance are good but it depends of what you like and don't like... For me, I prefer a V8 compared to a turboed 5 cylinder.

I love turbos so checked out the S60R, and my main complaints with it were:
1) The auto-adjusting suspension controls <b>everything</b> handling-wise, so if it goes out or starts acting up the car is going to handle very poorly, and of course will be insanely expensive to fix. People have already had to have software updates to their suspension done. That's a little <b>too</b> much technology for me.
2) Even with the suspension, the car wallowed a bit too much; compared to a B6 S4 it was obvious the S60R needs to be a much tighter vehicle, and the Volvo's power steering is boosted way too much, providing very little road feel.
3) The headlights are the same projector variety HIDs you see on Japanese cars and so have a <b>very</b> sharp cutoff; everything is either fully illuminated or completely dark. This makes them close to useless in many situations and is what was the "deal killer" for me.
4) Seating position. The seats are higher and give you a very "SUV"-like view of the road. Great for visibility, bad if you want to feel like you're driving a sports car. In short, more practical, less emotional (which pretty much defines Volvo.)
That having been said, it is indeed <i>very</i> quick, is a blast to drive and is $15K cheaper than a B6 S4, enough so that the difference has to really, REALLY mean a lot to you. It did to <i>me</i>, but it may not to <b>you</b>, so I definitely recommend that anyone considering a B6 S4 at least take an S60R for a test drive; you may save yourself $15K, not to mention you'll get around a 5-10 MPG increase with the Volvo...

Perhaps not unlike the B5 S4 stock, but certainly not like a B6 S4; there's way too much body roll left, making its handling seem very sedan-like and not sports car-enough.
If you're looking for a highway cruiser, though, I'd suggest the S60R may actually be a <b>better</b> choice for the gas mileage and relatively large gas tank (<b>much</b> less of an inconvenience fill up-wise than the S4.)
