Default 1000 miles is about right.

It will be the longest 1000 miles of your life though!

Default haha...i hear ya

Im at about 700 now.

Our M3 was 1200 - and we had to take it too the dealer for a 1200 mile SMG II check up before we could wrap it out...I drove it in the dealers garage with exactly 1200 on it

The longest ever was the 1000 we had to put on our GT3...**** that felt like forever

Default It depends on who you talk to and what you believe!

I believe you MUST start driving this car agressively at 100-300 miles to get the piston rings to properly seat. Some members who have babied their engines for the first 1000 miles have experienced oil consumption issues. Most who have been more agressive and ran car at or near redline early, are not having oil consumption problems. I'm sure that there are exceptions to both methods. You will want to check out MOTOMAN for his theory on engine break in. BTW the principles are the same for all internal combustion engines

MOTOMAN's break in theory

Default I have heard that too, so...

I usually go inbetween...I am at about 700 miles and have hit 5K rpm a few times...I slowly just work up to redline.

Default You're too late! You have missed a crucial period to insure complete piston seating!

You NEED to go out and do some WOTS at or near redline, followed by engine decelleration, NOW,NOW,NOW! Please don't baby this engine any longer . You may wind up with a car that is slower than the norm and burns oil. I hope for your sake I am wrong. I have 9300 mile on my car, and drove it to redline since 100 miles. ZERO oil consumption!!

Default I didnt even get a chance to break my car in....

But I know my Dad has been driving it and he has not been babying it, should I be worried? He has red lined it quite a few times and its not up to 1000 miles yet.
