What is the difference between horsepower & torque in regards to what you "feel" when driving?

an F250 turbo diesel makes torque peaking over 500, and HP is relatively low, but the RPM band is very small...redline is something like 4000RPM. RPM doesn't climb quickly, but torque is still very high. Doesn't this contradict your statement or am I missing something here?

A torquey car is like an elephant, it can move heavier stuff but isn't particularly fast since it can't get it's feet moving quickly (rpm analogy).
A car with high HP is like a Cheetah. It's fast but don't expect it to plough your fields.
So in looking at hp and torque, if you want a torquey car to be fast, it has to be able to raise rpm's quickly and to a high level.
